rules of engagement

From storyasking

Jump to: navigation, search

rules of engagement means, when teaching language, ask the learners to follow simple rules.. when teaching language to students, ben uses 3 or 4 rules to help focus the group.. use native language only:

  1. after teacher asks que quiere decir?
  2. after teacher asks any other question
  3. after teacher asks (in known language) "What did I just say?"
  4. when students speak to the teacher

only on above conditions can students speak in the known language.. (otherwise, they can only use the langauge being learned).. another set of rules goes like this:

  1. Listen with the intent to understand
  2. Squared shoulders/Straight back/Clear eyes
  3. Speak English ONLY when furnishing cute answers to my questions (TWO WORD LIMIT PER SUGGESTION) or after I say to you "What did I just say?"
  4. No "talking over"

above rules come from langauge teaching in schools, classrooms full of rowdy students.. maybe it's a good way to solve a big problem in schools.. maybe ben's simple rules can also adapt to fit other groups who gather to storyask?

  • group lessons by private teachers
  • multi-user games ie second life or metaplace or for the xo
  • informal conversation where it's agreed that one person is teaching language to other(s)
  • quien sabe?
