how to use a wiki?.. first, practice using the tabs above each wiki page:

image:WikiHowTabs.png

the article is the main page.. every article has a name: for example, the name of this article is "wiki/how".. the tabs let you manage this article.. for example, click the "edit" tab:

Contents

[edit] edit

anyone can edit a wiki page.. just click "edit"

review the reference links on the right to learn wiki syntax.. it's pretty simple.. even if you don't learn wiki syntax, you can still contribute..

the sandbox let's you play around and practice editing the wiki.. even if you accidently save a mistake, you can always revert to a previous edit.. the wiki remembers everything =)

[edit] history

click the history tab to see previous versions of this article..

image:WikiHowHistory.png

the current version is selected.. you can select any previous version and compare the two.. it's easy! try it!

[edit] revert

you can revert to an earlier version.. be careful, though.. i'm not sure if that erases later versions..

[edit] article

the article tab always takes you back to the selected version of the article..

image:WikiHowArticle.png

it's easy to create new articles.. either

  • click on a red text link or
  • write the article name in the URL ie: storyasking.com/new article

when you save a new article, people can then discuss it by clicking the discussion tab:

[edit] discussion

the discussion tab helps you discuss an article..

image:WikiHowDiscussion.png

for example, if you edit out text from the article, you can explain why in the the discussion.. if a discussion doesn't exist yet, start typing.. click save, and you start a discussion :)

the article is a good place to agree on facts.. discussion is a good place to free to express opinions..

[edit] save

hit the Show preview button to preview your edit.. when you're happy with your edit, hit the Save page button

note: include a summary of your edit to help us know what you changed.. when looking at a pages history, these summaries help a lot =)

[edit] sandbox

a good way to learn how to edit a wiki is to click edit on a page then see the source text.. a great way to learn how to edit a wiki is to play around in the sandbox
